World of Tanks is a free-to-play tactical massively multiplayer online vehicular combat game developed by Wargaming. Originally released for PC in 2010, the game centers on mid-20th-century armored warfare, featuring combat vehicles ranging from the interwar period and World War II up through the early Cold War era. Core Gameplay and Ballistics Matches typically feature 15v15 player-versus-player combat where teams win by either destroying all enemy vehicles or capturing the enemy base. Gameplay relies on deliberate positioning, sightlines, and ballistic physics rather than twitch reflexes. Armor penetration depends on shell caliber, velocity, and impact angles. Angling a tank hull increases effective armor thickness and can ricochet incoming rounds, forcing players to target specific weak spots like lower glacis plates and commander cupolas. Shell types include Armor-Piercing (AP), Armor-Piercing Composite Rigid (APCR), High-Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT), and High-Explosive (HE). The spotting system is governed by dynamic calculations between an observer's view range and a target's camouflage rating. Tanks also contain modeled internal modules (engines, ammo racks, tracks, fuel tanks) and crew members that can be damaged or knocked out. Vehicle Classes Light Tanks: Fast scouts responsible for vision control, spotting enemy positions, and flanking. Medium Tanks: Versatile all-rounders designed to support flanks, trade fire, and exploit gaps. Heavy Tanks: Heavily armored frontline combatants built to absorb damage and hold choke points. Tank Destroyers: Specialized snipers or heavy assault guns carrying high-penetration, high-damage cannons. Self-Propelled Guns (Artillery): Long-range indirect fire units operating from an overhead view that stun and damage entrenched targets. Progression and Economy Vehicles are arranged across Tier 1 through Tier 10 in tech trees spanning 11 nations. Players earn Experience (XP) and Credits in battle to research and purchase upgraded modules and higher-tier tanks. Currencies include Credits (earned in-game for routine purchases), Gold (premium currency for premium time and vehicles), and Bonds (earned via high-tier competitive modes for specialized gear). Tank crews gain individual experience to unlock performance-enhancing skills like Sixth Sense, Repairs, and Concealment. Game Modes The standard mode is Random Battles, played as Standard, Encounter, or Assault. Additional modes include Frontline (30v30 battles on large maps with respawns and combat reserves), Onslaught (competitive 7v7 ranked play), Clan Wars (territorial control on a global map), and Steel Hunter (a battle-royale survival mode). Platforms The flagship PC edition features the most advanced physics and graphics engine. World of Tanks Modern Armor is built for PlayStation and Xbox consoles and includes modern Cold War tanks, while World of Tanks Blitz is a fast-paced 7v7 mobile and cross-platform version.
